Hungary is a country located in Central Europe. Its capital is Budapest, its official language is Hungarian and its currency is forint. It borders Austria in the west, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia in the south and southwest, Romania in the southeast, Ukraine in the northeast and Slovakia in the north.
Hungary’s history begins with the emigration of the Magyar tribes around the year 896. Due to the attacks of the Bulgarians, they moved to the Danube plains and founded the first settlement in Obuda (Óbuda) and on the island of Csepel (where today’s Budapest is located). The Magyars have the reputation of merciless warriors and looted cities from Spain to Italy.
The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century are an era of prosperity and development for Budapest, but after the First and Second World Wars, when Hungary chose the side of the Germans, Budapest began to decline and lost much of its luster. However, after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the city has begun to recover and regained the glory of the past.
